Technology Needed For Online Distance Learning

The key to taking courses online is to be online. This means accessing the Internet and its various resources using a computer and some sort of connection, most likely using a modem and telephone line. Schools have different technological requirements for their online courses so you'll need to contact the school directly to get a specific list. However, most programs don't require that you be an expert in the field of computers-as long as you have some basic computing skills (knowledge of e-mail and the Web, and the appropriate software), you have the skills necessary. Some schools even offer orientation courses to prepare you for their online courses and the technology you'll be using.

Here is a list of some general, technological requirements that most online programs of study have in common.

  • Computer - While all online education requires a computer, you'll need to contact the school for specific equipment recommendations (speed, memory, and accessories).
  • Modem or other connection to the internet. - If your computer is not directly connected to the Internet, you will need to have a modem so that you can access information on the Internet via a telephone line. A modem allows your computer to talk to other computers through the telephone line. They can be internal (inside your computer) or external (plugged into one of your computer's serial ports).
  • Printer - Although you'll submit most of your assignments electronically over the Internet, many schools recommend having a printer for your own use and in case you need to submit something in paper form.
  • Speakers and a sound card - A sound card is an internal device on your computer that allows you to hear any kind of sound file that plays on your computer. If lectures for your online course are delivered as real-time video over the Internet, you'll need a sound card and speakers to hear them.
  • Internet Service Provider (ISP) - This is a company or organization that provides you with access to the Internet through a dial-up (telephone) or direct connection. America Online is an example of an Internet Service Provider.
  • Software - You will need various types of software: a word processor, a Web browser, an electronic mail program, and a program to participate in chat rooms, just to name a few.
